Tourism Spindleruv Mlyn
Recommended hiking trail of the Management of the Giant Mountains National Park (in winter, the trail is open only to the Pudlava affluent (4 km)).
The route through Labsky dul (Elbe valley) was established by the count of Harrach in 1879 and it could be called trail of the nature protection history in the Giant Mountains or „trail of glaciers". We will be accompanied by the biggest Czech river Elbe, traces of glacial activities and memories of the first Giant Mountains nature protectionist.
From the centre of Spindleruv Mlyn follow the blue marked trail the Divci lavky (asphalt road).
From Divci lavky to Dvorsky creek. We start where a 5 km long glacier ended which modelled the valley. The route rises up on the right bank of the river Elbe which after 1 km meets its left side affluent - Medvedin creek (Bear brook). A little bit above the mouth of the creek, 20 m high moraine is visible (stony elevation shifted by glacial activity). Then the trail crosses the river Elbe and follows it from the other side. In the place where we cross the Dvorsky creek the slope of Krkonose mountain rises on the opposit side. There is an old virgin forest above us. The first Giant Mountains nature reserve was proclaimed here in 1904 - Srtma stran (steep slope). From the mouth of Dvorsky creek to the mouth of Pudlava and to the Elbe hollows. At the next affluent of Pudlava, the cycling and cross-country skiing trail ends. On the slopes on the left side, avalanche slopes beginn. The Elbe valley is the richest valley for them - we can count 11 of them here. Attention!! This trail is closed during winter! In summer, the trail leads futher under three corries - Elbe corrie - Harrachov, Pancavka and Navorska. Under Labske jamy (Elbe hollows) to the Labska rokle (Elbe gorge).
The route is steeper and we will go accorss meadows with vegetation requiring high humidity. And we can observe 200 m high slopes of all three corries. Behind the Harrachova jama, we leave the Elbe which starts to meandre here. We can admire Pancavska jama (Pancava corrie) with Pancava waterfall which falls to a depth of 250 m and Schustlerova zahradka. We cross into the 1st zone of the National Park here. It is the most strictly protected area and we should remain only on the marked hiking trails. Then we continue to the Labska rokle (Elbe gorge) and through the Elbe gorge to the Elbe chalet.
We cross the Elbe river and ascend a steep, twisting, winding footpath between Novarska jaka on the left side and Labska gorge on the right side. The Elbe chalet was established in 1830 for tourists. It burned in 1965 and 10 years later was open the present building, which unfortunately does not fit into the mountain nature. On the right side is a 45 m high Labsky vodopad (Elbe waterfall).
And where can we go now? From the Elbe chalet, we can return along the green marked route to Martinova bouda (chalet) or we can follow the red marked Buchar trail to Spindleruv Mlyn (10 km).
Length: 8.7 km Elevation: 520 m Maximum altitude: 1300 m
