The mountain town Svoboda nad Upou is located 516 m above sea level in the east part of the Giant Mountains, in the Upa river and Jansky creek valley on the foothill of Rychory ridge. Svoboda nad Upou is a summer starting point of many tourist tracks and trails through the Giant Mountains. Svoboda nad Upou becomes more and more visited recreation centre thanks its location and development. Walks goes to hill Mochomurka, to neighbouring Janske Lazne with the funicular to the top of Cerna Mountain, or to the ridge of Rychory, where is situated the protected beech virging forest. The new large educational trail Via Piette is formed there today. Svoboda nad Upou is a town with a long tradition of paper and its surroundings offer good-class accommodation facilities and many attractions especially for families with children – horse riding, fishing, bowling, gameroom with table tennis, cycling tracks and mountains bike and scooter lending. In winter first-class ski centre, prepared cross-country tracks and skibus.
There was a settlements of miners who placer-mined gold here in 16th century. They continued with the mining in pits. The privilege of free mining enables the mining development. The Thirty Year´s War brought decline of mining that was definitely stopped at the end of the 18th century.After that, weaving entanted in the mountains. Railway bulging in 19th century was important for the town and paper industry expansion.
Ski area Mlade Buky – Pekelsky vrch (550 – 670 m above sea level) is situated about 2 km far from Svoboda nad Upou. This new ski area with ambitions to ensure first-class services to skiers grew on Pekelsky hill in recent years. Convenient location of the ski area near the main road Trutnov - Pec p.Sn., large car park directly in the area, 7 ski lifts and ski slopes of different levels, U-ramp, snowpark, artificial snow-making system, night skiing in the whole area and carefully prepared ski slopes brings more skiers each year. Skiers and snowboard lovers appreciat the choice from 7 ski lifts. Ski lifts Krtecek and Rosnicka are suitable especially for children.

Operation during the whole day and night skiing from 9 p.m. 5 km long cross-country trail is connected with the Giant Mountians cross-country tracks.
