Les Království Dam on the Elbe above Dvor Králové nad Labem

  • Venue: Bílá Třemešná

The impetus for the construction of dams on the upper reaches of the Elbe was the catastrophic flood in July 1897. A detailed project of the Les Království dam (formerly known as the Těšnov or Bílá Třemešná dam) was prepared by the Technical Department for Rivers in Prague Josef Plicky.

In 1909, the construction part of the waterworks was assigned to the company of Ing. J. V. Velflík in Prague and delivery of iron structures to the company Fanta & Jireš in Prague. The construction took place in the years 1910–1919, the long period of construction was greatly influenced by the First World War.

At the time, it was the largest reservoir in the Czechoslovak Republic in terms of the amount of water retained, and the longest dam in terms of the length of the brick dam.

In the years 1920–1923, on the right bank under the dam, the company of Ing. J. V. Velflík built a continuous hydroelectric power plant in Prague. The technological part was supplied by the company Českomoravská-Kolben from Prague and the electrical equipment by the company Křižík Praha.

Since 1958, the dam, including the hydroelectric power plant, has been an immovable monument due to its architectural uniqueness.

The purpose of the water work is

  • reduction of large waters on the Elbe and partial protection of the area under the dam from the effects of floods
  • use of effluents from the tank to produce electricity in a continuous hydroelectric power plant
  • ensuring a minimum residual flow in the Elbe below the reservoir
  • other uses in the sense of general use of water outside the protection zone of the waterworks (recreation, sport fishing, etc.)

It is a gravitational, arched brick dam made of Královédvor sandstone, which is located on the Elbe in the narrow canyon-like valley of Tišnov above Dvor Králové nad Labem. The height of the dam crown above the foundation joint is 41 m, the width in the crown is 7.2 m and the width at the foundation level is 37 m. The total length of the dam crown is 218 m. Five lower outlets are used to transfer flows under the dam. The unpaid crown overflow in the middle of the dam has five fields. Two shaft overflows are located symmetrically to the axis of the dam. The left with an inner diameter of 4.2 m is located about 80 m above the dam, the right with an inner diameter of 5.1 m about 150 m above the dam. Waste from individual manhole overflows is connected to the left and right bypass tunnel, which opens into the riverbed under the dam. The dam reservoir has a total volume of 7260.5 thousand. m3.

The continuous hydroelectric power plant is located on the right bank below the dam. The power plant is equipped with two horizontal Francis turbines, which have an installed capacity of 2 x 1.105 MW at a maximum capacity of 2 x 6.0 m3 / s.
